June 15, 2016

Yup! Schisandra is one of the super-foods in Shakeology. I never even knew it existed until I read the list of ingredients! It is one of the amazing ingredients in the proprietary adaptogens blend. What is an adaptogen? Definition for Merriam-Webster: a nontoxic substance and especially a plant extract that is held to increase the body's ability to resist the damaging effects of stress and promote or restore normal physiological functioning. In short- helps our bodies deal with stress and supports our immune system!

Chinese folklore says that Schisandra can "calm the heart and quiet the spirit." It has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Schisandra, also known as magnolia vine due to its ability to grow upwards in a creeping fashion, is a native to Northern China, Russia, and parts of Korea.

Its Chinese name is wu-wei-zi, which means five taste fruit. Schisandra has a sour, sweet, bitter, warm and salty taste, hence the name “five taste”.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has also used it as a lung astringent, for coughs, and asthma as well as the vines and roots for painful joints and rheumatism.

Schisandra is used as an adaptogen for increasing resistance to disease and stress, increasing energy, and increasing physical performance and endurance.  It is also used for treating liver disease (hepatitis) and protecting the liver against poisons.

The Chinese have developed a liver-protecting drug called DBD that is made from schisandrin, one of the chemicals in schisandra berry.
